Jerky January 11, 2010

Recently, we stumbled upon a little hole in the wall store the sold jerky, just jerky, but all kinds of jerky, and hot sauce.  It appeared that the proprietor smoked his jerky in the parking lot in front of the store, but as it was dark at the time I can’t say for certain.  So we bought a few different flavors of beef jerky and Jerky by A.D. Livingston.

After pouring over this book my husband decided that it would be fun, and cost efficient to make our own jerky.  So we invested in a dehydrator with a little money that we had from Christmas, bought a  big chunk of meat, and he commenced buying all sorts of spices and concoctions in which to marinade the beef.  Apparently smoke comes in liquid form and you can put it on food – who knew.

The first batch marinated simply in salt and garlic.  It reminded me of a cole slaw I made once where I put in 1/2 cup of salt instead of a 1/2 tablespoon.

The second batch with teriyaki sauce tasted amazing.

I am looking forward to what  might come out of the dehydrator next.
