Tackling the Mantle August 3, 2010

There are two problems with the mantle

1. It is a horizontal surface that tends to collect things

2. I have lots of kitsch that I enjoy displaying.

So I have come up with a solution that I hope will solve both problems and give me a more dust free mantle in the process: Seasonal decorating.  I already do this with Christmas, but if I do it with the other seasons as well then the mantle will get cleaned off at least 4 times a year.

I totally cleaned off the mantle

Then I just put back those few things that I want currently.

It looks like twice the amount of stuff due to the big mirror.  Then I took 4 boxes labeled them Spring, Summer, Winter, Spring and divided the rest of the kitsch accordingly and stored them in a closet.  Some of the other things, like my knitting needles went to a new shelf, where they are still available but off the mantle.  I did not really purge a whole lot – there were some papers that were thrown out but all in all I am happy with my solution to this super cluttered space.

Today’s tackle is brought to you by the letter M

Today was about

  • Mowing
  • Mailing

With all the refreshing rain the grass has been growing like crazy.  We had two days of dry.  The weather forecast was hot, humid with a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.  This meant I had to do it all, all at once.  So I took two hours and mowed, and mowed, and mowed.

In the afternoon I needed to get together my books to mail out.  Sorting, printing invoices, and enveloping the books.  I had a lot more sell than I expected.  There is something satisfying about a stack of envelopes ready to go to the post office.

Tackling a bookcase July 26, 2010

Today was not as spectacular as I had hoped, yet it was even more productive than I thought.

My plan:

To work on the downstairs including a bookcase and mantle in the morning, then clean out my bedroom closet in the afternoon.  I got as far as the bookcase.

Before:

A big part of this tackle was the weeding of the books (as my librarian sister-in-law would say).  I purged – and listed on Amazon’s marketplace – over 100 books today – that was the amazing productivity.  I still have 2 stacks waiting to be put in.  I have used Amazon for a couple of years now and would highly recommend this as a way to get rid of books.  They don’t all leave at once, but this is the best money I can get.  The books will go into a box that is guarding the fireplace from my little dude.  So it will serve a purpose while they wait to be purchased.  If they are not purchased by next spring I will donate them to a local book sale that happens every fall.

When I blogged about tacking the laundry I realized that the stairs really needed some attention. So I cleared off all the old mail, shoes and stuff that just doesn’t quite make it up to the daughter’s room. Got the old vacuum out and vac’ed the stairs.

I do keep the shoes on one side of the stairs, one of my super-clean friends does this. It has actually been a great clutter buster. Each pair of shoes has its very own step, they stay together an not in a big heap just to the right of the front door.

I have several projects around the house just screaming out to be tackled, but, alas today I am tackling laundry.  With Easter, Spring Bread and the little Dude’s birthday some of the daily housework has gone undone.  This includes laundry.

You know when it is time to do laundry when…

  • Your choice of shirts are either the paint spattered shirt or the ancient workout shirt.
  • The husband is wearing good argyle socks under his work boots.
  • The daughter asked if she could wear the flower girl skirt – from four years ago.
  • When told “no” to the too short skirt the daughter proceeds to ask if purple patterned pants go with orange pattern, sleeveless shirt.
  • When it is pointed out to the daughter that she can’t wear sleeveless shirts to school the wail goes up “but I don’t have anything to wear”
  • When the baby has worn the same outfit for longer than 24 hours.

When I do laundry I pre-treat stains, then I  throw everything in the washing machine and hope for the best.  I do try to get the clothes folded with in a day, so the wrinkles don’t set in too badly.  It helps that we really are a jeans and tee shirt kind of family – well that, and my husband is whiz with the iron.

It must be spring, all of my prospective tackles are outside.

I have been wanting to clean my front door/porch/entryway for sometime.  Because we live close to an industrial area black stuff settles on everything, and is especially noticeable on the white trim of my house. ( I really, really want to clean the windows and “shutters” but can’t figure out how.)  It is hard to see in the picture, but believe me it is there.

So I took some soap, water, a touch of Windex and some elbow grease and scrubbed down my front entry way.    It looks so much better: shiny and clean.

This was our second dead car that we were living with.  The big part of this tackle was getting my hands on the title.  I knew we had it somewhere, but, alas I could not find it anywhere.  So we had to get it from the Secretary of State (it’s like a DMV but bigger).  To add confusion to chaos the car was only in the husband’s name and apparently the Sate of Michigan believes in having the most inconvenient times to be opened – i.e. all the hours he was at work, and yes, you have to go in person to request these things.   So after some research I came up with a solution: a paper form signed by him empowering me to request this title.  So I took the paper and the baby (who demonstrated his very best monkey impersonation for the entire time we were there) and got the title.  Yep, two days later I found the original, in some random folder while I was cleaning.

Tackling another desk.  Apparently I like desks, I own five.  This one is not going anywhere, it is my current favorite and I am glad that it is clean.

This box has sat in my house for almost a year!  It contains information from the daughter’s school auction (I was in charge of the last one).  I offered to take it home and organize and purge duplicate information – a year it sat.

Well I went through it – put a lot of paper in the recycle box and it is back in its cupboard at school – and out of my house.

Tackling Time Management February 23, 2010

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Life can get busy, and busy can if enough is added to it turn into overwhelming.  I am precariously close to that overwhelm.  When I get overwhelmed, nothing gets done and that feeds into a whole ugly cycle that I would really rather not deal with.  So to circumvent the issue I am tackling time management and the “Tyranny of the Urgent” (fabulous pamphlet – I highly recommend it).  Here is my plan:

1. Make a list – I love lists they make me feel so together- of everything I have to do and want to do.

2. Then prioritize: put those things on the top of the list that are necessary for life and well-being.

3. Then just do it – what needs to get done will get done, and the rest will just have to lump it, and I am going to live with that.

While working through the things on my list I am going to listen to my absolute favorite, favorite productivity podcast the Get it Done Guy
